FPL 2020/21 – Gameweek 1

Gameweek 1 Team

I’ll do a quick run down of my squad by position. Bold players/template squad are nailed in my team. Gameweek horizon included after player name.

My takeaways post gameweek included at the end of the post.

1.0 ITB – for transfer flexibility and potential City/United price rises.

GK – McCarthy – 10/38, Martinez – 38

Two playing 4.5 keepers. I prefer having two goalies that play. It was a bit of a punt ahead of the deadline bringing in Martinez for Ryan ahead of a potential transfer. It was a calculated risk, as I think he’s clearly the best keeper at this price point and was linked with Villa or Brighton who both have a decent fixture run and rotate well with McCarthy for the first stretch of the season.

DEF – Trent – 38, Robbo – 38, Dier – 8, 4.5 DEF Rotation (Taylor/Lascelles)

Trent and Robbo are nailed. It’s so fun having them in my team. They also double as Liverpool attacking assets so can potentially double up on another team in the midfield/forward line. Dier is first choice CB for Spurs and they have a good fixture run to start the season. Easy transfer to Wolves DEF option too. Then 4.5 rotating DEFs to finish my back line.

MID – Aubz – to KDB GW3, Premium Captain Rotation (Mo), 5.5 MID (ASM), Soucek, 4.5 MID (Reed)

KDB nailed in my team for Gameweek 3-38. I always want another premium midfielder spot as a captaincy option (Aubz, Mo, Sterling, Kai, Bruno) so Mo at 12.0 is a good choice and placeholder for transfers. I will hold extra funds to ensure I can afford the most expensive player at this position. There are a surprising amount of decent punty options in the lower price brackets for midfield. ASM is fun, Soucek is a Moyes player to the core and Reed is a nailed 4.5 bench fodder.

FWD – Werner, Ings – to Martial GW2, 4.5 FWD (Davis)

I’m starting with a 9.5 and 8.5/9 forward. This provides flexibility to move to 10.5 and 7 spots if Aguero goes on a tear. Werner is exciting and playing for the most top heavy team in the league. Martial at his price is the best attacking asset on United and will play regardless of any transfers that go through. I wish a Brewster loan had gone through before the deadline as he’d be nailed, but the last forward spot is last spot on my bench.

Gameweek 1 Reaction/Takeaways:

Arsenal look solid but not spectaculr.. Aubz could have bagged more against Fulham. Fulham look awful as expected. Glad I didn’t commit to multiple Southampton assets to start the season. Wait and see with them. Palace gonna Palace.. Mo and Robbo best Liverpool performers. Trent and Bobby looked way off the pace. Leeds look exciting, Harrison possibly the best asset? West Ham look horrible. Newcastle look fun! Leicester attack doesn’t look cohesive. West Brom have no one interesting. Everton look like a good unit already. Wait and see with them, it could all come crashing down. Their reserves drop off in quality a lot from starting midfield. Spurs suck the joy out of life, keep an eye on the Dier spot in my team. Wolves looked such a good unit again, keeping an eye on Podence and Saiss (?, need a defender in that price bracket, not for his attacking return lol). Sheffield looked fine after the first ten minutes, offered little going forward but ok at the back. Werner the stand out Chelsea asset by far, they will need time to gel. Lamptey the stand out from Brighton. Don’t know if their attack looked good or Chelsea are so bad and open defensively (both probably?). Can only imagine the space Mo will have after the success Lamptey had.
