The Journey So Far
Hello! I’m Joseph Yeates, a data enthusiast with a passion for driving better decision-making by creating, curating, and communicating insights from data. I work primarily in Power BI, Excel, SQL, Python, and R, with further experience in Tableau, dbt, and Google Cloud, enabling me to tackle a wide array of challenges across different industries.
I created this website as a platform to showcase my projects, share insights through my blog, and connect with like-minded enthusiasts. Whether you’re here to explore my work, seeking collaboration, or just curious about data, I’m glad you stopped by!
Retail Banking
Through my experience with data in Retail Banking, I used SQL for data extraction and transformation, R for predictive modeling, and Power BI to communicate insights to executives, business leaders and operational teams alike. My work centered around improving client engagement, retention, and digital adoption through data-driven storytelling. One highlight was developing a digital engagement scorecard that helped teams track and accelerate clients’ migration to online banking. Another was building customer segmentation and engagement models that directly supported personalized service strategies. These projects deepened my understanding of how analytics can influence both strategic decisions and day-to-day operations.
E-Learning & Curriculum Design
From banking, I transitioned into e-learning, where I embraced the role of educator and content creator. I developed and presented a comprehensive Power BI curriculum, from fundamentals to advanced case studies, focused on applying business intelligence concepts to real-world use cases. These courses covered everything from data modeling and DAX to visualization best practices and report design. In addition, I created complementary learning paths for Excel, R, and Python for data analysis, empowering learners to integrate multiple tools across their analytics workflows. This work strengthened my ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical learning experiences that help others succeed in data analytics.
Architecture, Engineering, & Construction
As a Power BI consultant, one of my main areas of work is the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. I develop standardized SQL queries, Power BI data models, and DAX measures that serve as templates across firms. This helps accelerate the delivery of insights for Financial Statements, Utilization and Timesheets, Accounts Receivable, Project Planning, and Project Performance reporting. My work often involves tailoring these templates to each client’s data environment, balancing performance, auditability, and usability. I take pride in designing solutions that make complex reporting systems easier to maintain, interpret, and extend. This helps AEC firms better understand their business and plan with confidence.
Beyond the technical skills, I believe in the importance of community and sharing knowledge.
I’ve presented at numerous user groups and conferences, sharing best practices and lessons learned from my experiences. I also maintain a blog and YouTube channel where I delve into topics related to data analysis, visualization techniques, and the latest trends in technology.
I regularly speak at the Vancouver Power BI & Modern Excel User Group and am always looking for opportunities to speak and present to any community group, so please feel free to reach out!
Outside of data, my weekends start early with Liverpool FC matches, and as an avid runner I have completed a few half-marathons. I am aiming to complete a full marathon one day – probably while listening to my favorite podcasts or Dreamville album!
Let’s connect! Feel free to contact me on your preferred platform. I’m always open to discussing new projects, opportunities for collaboration, or simply exchanging ideas over coffee.
Thank you for visiting my corner of the internet. I look forward to connecting with you.
